HCSS Centre for Strategic Studies

Security Studies

Current international relations are dominated by interconnected developments: the relative decline in power among Western states, the rise of major Asian powers such as China and India, the rise of new regional powers such as Iran, the competition for secure supplies of oil, gas and other vital resources and the functioning of international institutions such as the UN, NATO and EU. In addition, failing states, international terrorism and international crime pose security challenges.

National policy and European integration are not isolated from these global trends and developments. The security studies programme provides the overall context for HCSS research and forms the foundation for our analysis and policy advice.

Programme focus:

  • Geopolitical and regional studies
  • Global trends and challenges
  • Risks and threats in international relations
  • Contextual analyses
  • Assessment of implications of global trends on future policy
