On June 11, The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies will host a meeting with Michael Wahid Hanna, Senior Fellow with The Century Foundation in Washington DC on the topic of the geopolitical impact of water and food security on stability in the MENA region.
Potential for conflict can arise from the fact that multiple countries are dependent for their food and energy needs on water from rivers that straddle several countries. In addition, food security has been a major factor in explaining the origins of the Arab revolutions since 2011, and is thus a key geopolitical driver where domestic stability and security in the countries of the MENA region are concerned. The discussion will be an opportunity for discussion between key policy-makers, academics and stakeholders to help further frame strategic policy-making towards the MENA region beyond today’s headlines.
