Marjolein de Ridder and Sijbren de Jong analyze the ‘shale gas revolution’ and its possible geopolitical implications. As a result of the shale gas revolution, the U.S. can become independent of oil- and gas imports, mainly from the Middle East.

What does that mean for the traditional role of ‘global policeman’, assumed by the U.S. after the Second World War? Are rising powers like India and China able and willing to take over (part of) that role?
