Russia’s oil production from its large conventional oil fields in Siberia is showing a gradual decline.
In order for Russia’s state oil company Rosneft to make good on its ambitions to join the oil superleague, it will have to expand production by tapping into technologically more complex fields, including for unconventional sources such as shale oil.
Western sanctions banning the sale of high-tech equipment for deepwater/unconventional oil and gas exploration however make life difficult for Russian companies such as Rosneft.
